The Roller Coaster of change

Change is this incredible force that has the power to shape our lives in the most profound ways. But let’s get real for a minute; it is not always rainbows and sunshine, it is more like a wild roller coaster ride; isn’t it? It can be down right uncomfortable; sweaty palms, butterflies in the tummy, nausea and many, many other uncomfortable feelings. Yet somehow it is in these moments of discomfort we often find our super powers; the ability to adapt, to grow and to kick but despite the discomfort.

Five steps to change

1. Setting realistic goals: Let’s get real, no need for big scary goals. Your counsellor can help you break your goals down step by step so they are achievable in a realistic time frame. Your counsellor will help you to reflect on what you truly want and desire and help you to clarify your goals to guide you in the right direction.

2. Getting tactical with strategies This is where your counsellor makes sure your armoury is full so to speak. Your counsellor will teach you techniques and give you tools from mindfulness tricks, to problem solving hacks; you will have a arsenal of strategies to tackle whatever life throws at you on your journey towards change.

3. Riding the rollercoaster: Once you jump on this ride, you have to hold on, remembering it will get uncomfortable at times. Your side kick; your counsellor is there to encourage you, cheer you on, challenge you and help you stay focused. Most importantly don’t let fear hold you back, embrace the discomfort and trust in your ability to navigate this ride, you have done it before!

4. Time to chill and reflect: Change isn’t always about doing; it is just as important to take time to reflect and chill. Your counsellor will encourage you often to reflect, chill and to celebrate every milestone. Your counsellor will also check-in to make sure you are still headed in the right direction.

5. Support: Doing this alone is not a option, building a support grew, whether that is family, friends or your fur babies; support is vital. Your counsellor will teach you communication skills to help you call on those supports when needed.

Conclusion

Remember change is a journey, not a race or a destination. Try to embrace the discomfort, trust in yourself and your side kick;) It may not always be easy but with the right support; it can be one heck of an adventure. So if you are ready to embark on a journey of self-discovery, make sure to grab yourself a sidekick and jump on that roller coaster!
